Since 1950, Lutz and Carr has been dedicated to providing quality, personalized tax compliance, consulting and planning services to wide-ranging clients and audit services to not-for-profit entities.
As significant as our niche audit services are for not-for-profits, our Tax Practice focuses on meeting the needs of individuals, personal service companies, and businesses and individuals in the entertainment sector, including the film and TV industry, directors, writers, actors and musicians. Our accounting firm’s clients also include many real estate companies, closely held businesses, individuals and their families, estates and trusts.
We believe in teamwork, an open-door policy, professional development, camaraderie, and the personal relationships that result both in the office and with our clients. We are friendly, caring and connected, responsive to our clients’ needs, and proactive in identifying and managing risks. Our accounting professionals work seamlessly with clients and their other professionals to serve their needs, help minimize their tax exposure, plan smartly for the future, protect not-for-profit tax status, and solve financial challenges. Our firm continuously strives to improve our services, investing in our people and technology to streamline service and improve efficiency so our clients can realize their goals. As so many accounting firms in NYC merge and consolidate, Lutz and Carr remains independent, devoted to our principles, our people, and our long and meaningful client relationships.

While Lutz and Carr provides accounting, tax compliance, consulting and planning services for businesses and individuals of varied profiles, most of our work is split between audit services for not-for-profits in the arts cultural and related arenas and tax services for businesses and individuals in the entertainment industry and creative arts.
Since our firm’s founding more than 70 years ago, our identity has been closely aligned with the arts, cultural and creative communities of New York City. We are a go-to firm handling simple and complex tax matters for not-for-profits, the entertainment sector, and related industries, and we are one of the few accounting firms certified to handle New York City film tax credit work. These highly specialized industries require a nuanced understanding of their unique business requirements and practices. Our expertise and specialization in these areas are why the majority of our clients have always come through referrals.
Lutz and Carr is a leading provider of tax, audit and accounting services to the not-for-profit sector. We work with more than 500 not-for-profits with accounting, reporting, tax, and regulatory issues and responsibilities, including prominent arts and cultural institutions, community and social service agencies, philanthropic organizations, and public and private foundations that provide vital programs and services for the public.

Firm founded by Robert (Bob) Carr and Edward Lutz – in the back office of Ed Lutz’s cousin’s law office.
We started working with a few of the law firm’s summer stock theater clients, and that work quickly transitioned into a specialization with commercial Broadway theatrical productions and the emerging nonprofit performing arts sector – most notably, Joe Papp and the New York Shakespeare Festival / Public Theater, which has remained a client of the firm to this day.
Expanded firm’s specialization in the nonprofit performing arts community, and extended the firm’s practice with other nonprofit visual arts organizations and cultural institutions, and established our work with arts and entertainment entrepreneurs in the performing arts, entertainment and film industries; a staff member represented the firm on national TV – Wheel of Fortune – he did not guess one letter correctly, securing our resolve to stick to the numbers.
